IN THE STUDIO

At the heart of Sienna Martz’s artistic practice is a commitment to redefining sculpture through fiber, sustainability, and ecological awareness. While grounded in traditional textile techniques, her work moves beyond conventional distinctions between craft and sculpture, engaging organic form, spatial presence, and immersive experience. Drawing inspiration from natural systems — growth, accumulation, erosion, and regeneration — Martz translates these processes into tactile, abstract sculptural environments.

Her work explores the balance between softness and structure, reflecting the complex relationship between human intervention and nature’s inherent resilience. By using fiber as a primary sculptural medium, Martz invites viewers into a slower, more embodied engagement with form. Her sculptures create contemplative spaces that foreground material presence and ecological narrative, encouraging sustained attention and reflection rather than immediate consumption.

INSPIRATION & VISION

MATERIALS & PROCESS

Material choice is both a conceptual anchor and an ethical commitment in Martz’s work. She utilizes plant-based fibers, recycled textiles, and upcycled materials to craft tactile, immersive forms that are as thoughtful in their creation as they are in their appearance. Martz is a vegan artist who explicitly rejects animal-derived materials in favor of plant-based sources, a choice rooted in her opposition to animal cruelty and commitment to sustainable practice. Every material is carefully selected with environmental awareness at the forefront, ensuring that the work minimizes harm and respects the ecology from which it originates.

Martz’s process is slow, labor-intensive, and grounded in repetition. Techniques such as layering, stitching, binding, and accumulation shape surfaces that respond to touch, light, and time, allowing form to evolve in dialogue with material history. Through sustained engagement with fiber, historically associated with domestic craft, Martz expands sculptural vocabulary to include softness, tactility, and ethical concern. Her method emphasizes care, resilience, and intention, fostering an embodied experience of sculpture that resonates with ecological consciousness and formal innovation.
