IN THE STUDIO

At the heart of Sienna Martz’s practice is a commitment to redefining sculpture through fiber, sustainability, and ecological awareness. Grounded in traditional textile techniques, her work moves beyond distinctions between craft and sculpture, engaging organic form, spatial presence, and embodied experience. Drawing from natural systems such as growth, accumulation, erosion, and regeneration, she translates these processes into tactile, abstract sculptural environments.

Her work explores the tension between softness and structure, reflecting the complex relationship between human intervention and natural resilience. Working primarily with reclaimed and plant-based fibers, Martz invites viewers into a slower, more physical engagement with material and space. Her installations create contemplative environments that foreground texture, scale, and transformation, encouraging sustained attention and reflection.

INSPIRATION & VISION

MATERIALS & PROCESS

Material choice is both a conceptual anchor and an ethical commitment in Martz’s work. She works with plant-based fibers, recycled textiles, and upcycled materials to craft tactile, immersive forms shaped as much by process as by appearance. Martz is a vegan artist who rejects animal-derived materials in favor of plant-based sources, a position grounded in opposition to animal cruelty and a commitment to sustainable practice. Her material decisions are guided by environmental awareness, aiming to minimize harm and remain attentive to the ecologies from which the work emerges.

Martz’s process is slow, labor-intensive, and rooted in repetition. Techniques such as layering, stitching, binding, and accumulation build surfaces that respond to touch, light, and time, allowing form to evolve in dialogue with material history. Through sustained engagement with fiber—historically associated with domestic craft—Martz expands sculptural language to include softness, tactility, and ethical concern. Her method emphasizes care, resilience, and intention, fostering an embodied experience of sculpture that resonates with ecological awareness and formal experimentation.
